The highest point of the Vendée
One of the most remarkable aspects of Saint-Michel-Mont-Mercure is its altitude. At 290 metres, it is one of the highest towns in Vendée and offers exceptional views of the Vendée countryside. The church, decorated with a statue of Saint-Michel almost 9 metres high, is a real emblem and attracts many visitors. At its feet, you will find the highest road in Vendée.
A bit of history
The history of Saint-Michel-Mont-Mercure is as fascinating as its panorama. The site is said to have been an ancient place of lunar worship dedicated to the god Lug. The current church, built in the 19th century, houses a replica of the statue of Saint-Michel de Fourvière de Lyon.
